The 5th Kofi Annan-Dag Hammarskjold Annual Lecture ended yesterday at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre with a call by Professor Olawale Albert, of University of Ibadan, for there to be a continental and regional response to Xenophobia.
He argued that, there has been a conspicuous absence of solutions by the African Union in helping deal with the numerous attacks of Africans killing Africans. He cited how Somalia-Kenyans are humiliated every day — yet there continues to be silence from the continental institution.
Interestingly, he explained how for all the AU’s shortcomings on peace and security, without a doubt, the decade-old AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) remains an example of a successful AU peace enforcement done without direct involvement of the United Nations.
