EAC started its customs union in 2005, while ECOWAS commenced theirs in 2015
The report presents both EAC and ECOWAS as the only AU-RECs operating a customs union.
Further, the report is simply blasting with intention the necessity of AfCFTA moving into an African Continental Customs Union (AfCCU) as practically as possible as FTAs remain burdensome.
Finally, ARIA XI proposes five options that will help bring to life the AfCCU, with the best option looking like a transformation of the Secretariat into AfCCU.
